Agnes Zsigmondi McCraven
Born in Budapest, Hungary, she attended the Industrial art college as a pottery major. She has created arts and crafts throughout her life making leather vests and coats, felt coasters and pillowcases and designed her own clothing as a seamstress.
At the highlight of Agnes' musical career she was the lead singer of the renown Hungarian worldmusic group, Kolinda. The group toured and recorded extensively in Europe performing in famous theatres, international folk festivals and television and radio stations.
A lifelong artist, after retiring from teaching music in the public schools for 25 years, she now concentrates on painting. Her artwork has been shown in juried exhibits and her greeting cards of her original artwork are sold successfully.
Timeline
1974 - In her youth in Hungary Agnes was a student of many art forms
Agnes studied and practiced pottery, puppetry, theatre, figure sculpting and drawing.
1974 - Became the co-founder and lead singer of the group Kolinda.
The group composed their own music, drawing from the rhythms and melodies of central European music and were popular in Hungary, where they were received enthusiastically. They played concerts at the Theatre de la Ville and Olympia in Paris and festivals in St. Florent, Nyon and Bern and recorded three albums in France.
1978 - Agnes resumed her solo career
She performed successfully at the Palais des Glaces and the at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.
1985 - Agnes moved to the US and debuted at the Speakeasy Club in New York.
She has performed in New England Clubs and Universities and recorded CD's of her original arrangements and compositions in her unique style, based on East European traditional rhythms and melodies.
1990 - Started her career as a music teacher in Amherst-Pelham Schools
Agnes was an awarded and beloved teacher for over 25 years who put her heart and soul into the musicals, performances and classroom lessons. She dedicated herself to looking after her students and sharing her love of music with them.
2017 - Retired & started studying painting
After retiring from the school district, she began to take classes at a local community college and found a passion for painting.
2019 - Painting was juried in first show
Since Agnes started painting, she has created countless works of art, been juried in 4 shows and had her first solo show in February 2023.
